Corn

Corn

According to information of Agricultural Holding “August”, in the middle of November 2010 11,63 mln. tons of corn were harvested from 2,54 mln. hectares by an average yield of 45,6 hundred kilograms per hectare.

Description:

Corn is one of the most ancient cereal grains that originates from Central and South America. In American continent it was cultivated as far back as 5 – 10 thousand years ago. It was essential food crop for local people during many years.

Corn is the most widespread crop in the global agronomy. Both in the global grain production and in Ukraine corn is the third after wheat and rise, and it is the first in the grain forage group. It makes almost 15% of the croppage. That’s why corn sale takes one of the leading places in the global market. Corn is sold by wholesale and small lots all over the world and the most of it is Ukrainian product. Corn growing and sale are the main directions of domestic agriculture and our company successfully deals with corn sale.

In the balance of global grain production corn makes 29,2%. 70% of corn is used as forage, 15 – 20% is used for food needs, 10 – 15% - for technical needs.

By the general acreage of corn for silage Ukraine is among the countries which have largest corn acreages. Corn is drought resistant and has high fodder value; it has set a world record on productivity among cereal grains and its productivity can amount 70 – 90 hundred kilograms per hectare. Corn’s productivity for silage amounts 600 – 700 hundred kilograms per hectare. Average productivity in Ukraine is 30 – 35 hundred kilograms per hectare. Global corn production amounts about 600 mln. tons a year, at the same time wheat production amounts 570 mln. tons.  That’s why corn is bought by wholesale by many countries, due to its high crop capacity it gives the possibility to get essential quantity of product using minimum costs. To buy corn is very easy, it is hardy and takes root relatively easy.

Corn kernels are widely used in food and microbiological industries, in medicine and other branches of economy.

Corn is successfully used in miscellaneous ways. Nothing can be compared to corn with respect to universality.

Corn is one of the most valuable fodder crops. Kernels are used both for food needs (20%) and for forage (60 – 65%). By the contend of fodder units corn kernel dominates over barley, oat and rye. One kilogram of kernels contains 1,34 fodder units and 78g of digestible protein.

Being the most valuable among forage grains by the high nutritional abilities corn is characterized by high content of starch (up to 70%) and fat (4 - 6 %), low content of fiber (2 – 4%). Corn kernel contains 65 – 70% of carbohydrates, 9 – 12% of protein, vitamins A, Bp, B2, B6, E, C, essential amino acids, mineral salts and microelements. Such kernel composition predetermines its high food, fodder, and technical value.

Corn kernels are widely used for food needs. More than 150 food and technical products such as flour, maize grits, flakes, starch, syrup, glucose, and alcohol are made of corn. From 100 kg of kernels it’s possible to get 37 – 40 liters of alcohol that is more than from kernels of other crops.

Valuable food oil is extracted from corn germs, this oil has curative abilities (decreases cholesterol level and prevents atherosclerosis). Artificial ant oil, lignin, xylose, fiber and paper are made of corn cores.

From 1 hundred kilograms of kernels it’s possible to get 56 kg of starch (or 60 kg of fructose, or 32 liters of alcohol), 22,4 kg of fodder containing 21% of protein, 5,2 kg of glutheine flour and 2,7, kg of corn oil.

Corn has high agronomic importance. When the agronomic requirements are met corn leaves behind the soil clear from weeds and mellowed. Sufficient part of organics returns as roots and straw remains.
