Pea

Pea
Description:

Pea is one of the most ancient agricultural crops. Southeast Asia is considered to be its motherland; it was cultivated there even in the Stone Age.

Pea is the main grain legume in Europe, and in Ukraine it occupies the largest acreages among grain legumes during many years.

Pea is cold resistant, fast-growing and unpretentious to soil. It is cultivated for food and fodder. It is a good predecessor in crop rotation.

Although pea is not a sowing leader among annual legumes, it plays an important role in grain and protein problems solution in some countries.

Pea provides the highest yields among grain legumes – 30 – 50 hundred kilograms per hectare.

Pea seeds contain 20 – 35% of protein, starch, sugar, fats, vitamins, carotene, minerals (potassium, calcium, manganese, iron, and phosphorus). All these components make it valuable not only as food (high taste characteristics) but also as diet and curative product. It promotes elimination of salts in human body. It is curative for people with hart diseases. 100 g of pea seeds contain 491 kcal (100 g of wheat contain 457 kcal). The protein amount is the same as in raw meat.

Pea grits are used for concentrated fodders production. Cattle is also fed with herbage, hay, straw; their nutritional abilities are much higher comparing to cereal grains owing to high protein content. Seeds of grain legumes contain 200 – 300g of digestible protein per one fodder unit, and herbage – 150 – 200g. Owing to legumes, cattle industry needs of protein are met on 70 – 75%. By its energy value pea is close to barley and trails only corn.

Agronomic importance of pea lies in fertilizing the soil with valuable organics and nitrogen, enriching a plowing layer with phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and improving soil’s structure, increasing its fertility.

According to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine as of November 2010 there were successfully harvested 477 thousand tons of pea by 28,2 hundred kilograms per hectare of average yield.
